The philosophy of pokohiwi ki pokohiwi, standing shoulder to shoulder and looking towards the light, underpins the project’s design approach.

Ashton Mitchell is delighted to celebrate a significant milestone in Kāinga Haumaru’s Pukekohe project, with the roof being completed. To mark the occasion, a traditional roof shout was held on-site, bringing together the project team, partners, and supporters who have worked to bring this vision to life.
Kāinga Haumaru is made possible by Ember Korowai Takitini, a prominent community support provider in the Auckland region. The multi-residential development promotes well-being and is situated in an established central Pukekohe neighbourhood. Designed to provide secure homes for individuals grappling with addiction and mental distress, the project reflects a commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive, and empowering community.

The development consists of 14 thoughtfully designed apartments, with a combination of one- and two-bedroom units. Accessibility and inclusivity remain a key focus, with all ground-floor apartments fully wheelchair accessible. Generous landscaped communal gardens further enhance the sense of belonging, fostering interaction and connection among residents.
The philosophy of pokohiwi ki pokohiwi, standing shoulder to shoulder and looking towards the light, underpins the project’s design approach. Every architectural decision has been made with this philosophy and the well-being of residents in mind, ensuring that Kāinga Haumaru is not just a place to live, but a place to thrive and grow.
In addition to its social impact, Kāinga Haumaru incorporates principles of kaitiakitanga – guardianship of both people and the environment. Passive solar design ensures optimal sunlight exposure in winter while deep eaves provide shading in summer, enhancing energy efficiency. The project also includes sustainable features such as rainwater collection for irrigation, natural stormwater treatment, and a low-carbon timber structure to minimise concrete and steel use. Energy-efficient appliances and on-site recycling and composting facilities further support sustainability goals.
This milestone is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of all involved. We look forward to seeing the project progress towards completion, delivering a housing solution that embodies kaitiakitanga, sustainability, and community care.
