Made possible by Ember Korowai Takitini, a prominent community support provider in the Auckland region, the Kāinga Haumaru multi-residential project aims to offer secure homes for individuals grappling with addiction and mental distress. Nestled within an established Pukekohe neighbourhood, the recent groundbreaking ceremony, led by respected kaumātua Robert Clark, Robert Hita, and Whaea Donna Kura-Tearii, alongside Ember’s Max Williams and Peti Deed, marked a significant step towards fostering a community dedicated to healing and support.

The event was well attended and saw the participation of Ember Korowai Takitini, the consultant and building team, and representatives from Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, underscoring the collaborative effort invested in this important project. Scheduled to commence construction in early 2024, with completion targeted for 2025, the project envisions 14 new apartments set amongst generous landscaped communal gardens. The development features a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, with all ground-floor units designed to be wheelchair accessible, promoting inclusivity.

The driving force behind the project’s design is the concept of ‘pokohiwi ki pokohiwi’. Where residents stand shoulder to shoulder, supported by the Kāinga Haumaru and Ember teams. The emphasis is on uplifting the residents by fostering a sense of security and respect, with a community focus.
