Cancer Society Domain Lodge

Ashton Mitchell won a design competition to design a multi purpose medical support facility which provides for the needs of cancer patients and their families when undergoing treatment.

The building provides 51 accommodation suites, communal dining, hobby and living areas, a library/research facility, basement carpark and the main administrative and support facilities for the Auckland Cancer Society and the Leukemia Blood Foundation.

The use of traditional materials, forms and colour was used to form an intimate and subtle residential feel. The brief required the design approach to incorporate traditional elements to strike an accord with the broad spectrum of patients arriving from around New Zealand and make them feel comfortable & relaxed during their stay.

The 4500m2 approx. facility sits within an extensively landscape environment. The design approach was to split the facility into humanely scaled wings that maximized sunlight, views and landscaping.
